Or not as the case may be! That was the message from Roger Kitchen of Kitchen’s Ink and the trainer for
Holding Back the Tide’s oral history training day held at CoastNet offices in Rowhedge last week on Friday 9 May.
The aim of the day was to demystify the technique and according to Roger you dont need to be Michael Parkinson!
That said there are still some golden rules of interviewing to ensure that desired outcome. The day also covered question preparation, interview practise with local volunteers, digitising and archiving tips.
The task of interviewing people about coastal change in East Anglia is being conducted by CoastNet staff, community group members, oral history societies as well as individuals from each of the communities participating in Holding Back the Tide.
The course was organised via the British Library’s Sound Archive Unit. Follow up sessions will be held throughout the project to provide feedback on interviewing skills and assessment of archive material.
